The GOAL of the Tournament is about “PAYING IT FORWARD”

The Youngtimers Hockey Team has been hosting a 3 vs 3 tournament for over 30 years.  In 2001 the tournament was named “The Rod Harquail Memorial Hockey Tournament” in memory of their team mate, Rod Harquail, who had passed away after a car accident. In 2007, “The Rod Harquail Fund” was created to help sick and/or injured children in our region.  Since the fund was created over $64,000 were given to local families in need.  This year, at the tournament, the Youngtimers Hockey Team and the Rod Harquail Fund Committee, were very touched when a 12 year old boy, Alex Godin, donated $50 of his own money towards the fund.  6 years ago, during Easter Weekend while his dad was participating in the tournament, Alex was experiencing some stomach pains.  The committee reacted immediately.  The Rod Harquail Fund gave his parents, Serge Godin & Tracy Jeffries, a cheque on the spot.  The following week, Alex underwent a 9 hour surgery at the IWK in Halifax and made a full recovery.  “We have had parents & family members of former recipients donate in the past but this is the 1st time that we receive a cash donation from a child that we have helped” explains Rod Harquail Fund President, Evie Harquail.  The Rod Harquail Fund is our way to help our community, and young Alex really understands the spirit of paying it forward and he feels that it is important to help others that might go through the same challenges that he faced.
